Cloves are a fragrant spice commonly used in cooking and traditional wellness practices. They contain plant compounds such as eugenol, which has antioxidant properties. However, there is no good evidence that drinking cloves can cure cataracts, restore eyesight, or treat eye disease.
If you’d like to enjoy cloves as a simple beverage, here’s an easy preparation:
Ingredients
- 4–5 whole cloves
- 1 cup (250 ml) water
- Optional: a small piece of cinnamon or a little lemon for flavor
Step 1: Prepare the Cloves
Place the whole cloves in a small saucepan or cup. If you prefer a stronger flavor, lightly crush them before use.
Step 2: Add Hot Water
Bring the water to a boil and pour it over the cloves.
Step 3: Let It Steep
Cover the cup and allow the cloves to steep for approximately 5–10 minutes.
Step 4: Strain
Remove the cloves by straining the liquid into another cup.
Step 5: Enjoy
Drink it warm. You can add a small amount of lemon or another preferred ingredient for taste.
What Can Cloves Actually Do?
Cloves provide antioxidants and can be part of a varied, nutritious diet. But a clove drink shouldn’t be presented as a treatment for blurred vision, cataracts, glaucoma, or other eye conditions.
For protecting eye health, the fundamentals matter much more: eat a varied diet, don’t smoke, protect your eyes from excessive UV exposure, manage conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and have regular eye examinations when recommended.
Important: Never put clove oil, clove extract, or homemade clove preparations directly into your eyes. They can cause significant irritation or injury. If you develop sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, flashes, or a sudden increase in floaters, seek urgent medical attention.
