PART 2
I understood his niece was a child and that the situation could be serious. But I also knew one thing: this was not simply about whether I liked having another person in the house.
It was about how my husband had handled it.
I looked at him and asked calmly:
“Why is she staying with us?”
He sighed.
“Her mother is going through a difficult situation. She needs somewhere safe to stay.”
I looked at the girl.
She stood quietly beside her suitcase, looking frightened and uncomfortable.
My anger suddenly became mixed with guilt.
I realized she had done absolutely nothing wrong.
I knelt down beside her.
“What’s your name, sweetheart?”
She told me.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded, but her eyes filled with tears.
That was when I understood that there was much more to the story than my husband had told me.
I turned back to him.
“Why didn’t you tell me any of this yesterday?”
He remained silent.
“Who is her mother?”
“My sister.”
“And what happened?”
He finally sat down.
“She left the village two days ago.”
I stared at him.
“Left where?”
He lowered his voice.
“She disappeared.”
My heart dropped.
“Disappeared?”
He nodded.
“Nobody knows where she went.”
I looked at the girl again.
Suddenly, I understood why she had been carrying luggage.
She hadn’t simply come for a visit.
She had nowhere else to go.
I asked my husband:
“How long did you plan to keep this from me?”
“I didn’t want to worry you until I knew what was happening.”
“But you should have told me before bringing her here.”
He looked down.
“You’re right.”
Those three words were the last thing I expected to hear.
I walked over to the girl and picked up her suitcase.
“Come inside.”
My husband looked surprised.
I continued:
“She’s not going back to the village tonight.”
The girl looked at me.
“Really?”
I smiled.
“Yes. You’re safe here.”
My husband stood up.
“Thank you.”
I stopped him.
“Don’t thank me yet.”
He looked at me.
“We still need to talk about something.”
“What?”
“If we’re going to raise or care for someone together, we make decisions together.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
That evening, we prepared a room for her.
She barely spoke.
After the children went to sleep, I sat beside her.
I asked her about her mother.
She started crying.
Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“My mother told me that if anything happened to her…”
She reached into her backpack.
“…I should give this to Uncle.”
She pulled out a small envelope.
I looked at my husband.
His expression changed instantly.
“What is it?” I asked.
He took the envelope with trembling hands.
But before he could open it, the girl’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
“Who is calling?” I asked.
She whispered:
“It’s my mother.”
My husband grabbed the phone.
“Answer it.”
The girl pressed the button.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a woman’s frightened voice came through the speaker:
“Don’t trust anyone. They know where my daughter is.”
The call suddenly ended.
My husband and I stared at each other.
Whatever had happened in the village…
was now coming to our house.
