Yellow teeth are one of the most common concerns people have about their smile, especially as they get older. Coffee, tea, tobacco, red wine, certain foods, plaque buildup and natural changes in tooth enamel can gradually make teeth look darker or more yellow. At the same time, gums may become more sensitive and require extra attention.
The good news is that one of the most effective habits for maintaining a cleaner, healthier-looking smile is also one of the simplest: spending about two minutes brushing your teeth correctly, twice a day.
This isn’t a secret treatment that can rebuild gums overnight, and there is no household ingredient capable of magically removing years of deep stains in two minutes. But a consistent oral-care routine can help control plaque, reduce surface staining and support healthier gums over time.
Start with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Wet the toothbrush lightly, apply the toothpaste and begin brushing gently along the gumline. Hold the toothbrush at a slight angle so the bristles can reach the area where the teeth and gums meet.
Avoid pressing too hard. More pressure does not mean better cleaning. Aggressive brushing can irritate the gums and contribute to enamel wear or gum recession.
Spend several seconds on each section of your mouth. Clean the outer surfaces of the upper and lower teeth, then move to the inner surfaces. Pay particular attention to the back teeth because plaque and food particles often accumulate there.
Next, brush the chewing surfaces of the molars. Use small, gentle movements and make sure you reach the areas furthest toward the back of the mouth.
Finally, gently brush your tongue. The tongue can hold bacteria and food particles that contribute to unpleasant breath.
