For three years, my mother screamed whenever anyone tried to wash her back

The Scars Beneath Her Clothes

“No one did this to me.”

Paige stared at Beatrice’s reflection in the bathroom mirror.

Then came the words that changed everything.

“I chose to walk into the fire.”

For several seconds, neither woman moved.

The room was so quiet Paige could hear the faint ticking of the old wall clock.

“Why?” Paige finally whispered.

Beatrice lowered her eyes.

“Because forty years ago, there was a little girl in my house who was dying.”

Paige swallowed.

“What little girl?”

“My daughter.”

Paige’s face went pale.

“You have a daughter?”

Beatrice nodded.

“I had two children. Brandon… and Emily.”

Paige knew Brandon.

Everyone at St. Jude knew Brandon.

But she had never heard the name Emily.

“What happened to her?”

Beatrice looked toward the window.

“She was four years old.”

And then, very slowly, she began to tell the story.

Forty-two years earlier, Beatrice had been thirty-four years old.

She lived in a small house outside Columbus with her husband, Robert, and their two children.

Brandon was eight.

Emily was four.

Emily had been born with a serious heart condition. Doctors had warned the family that she might not live past childhood.

But Beatrice refused to accept that.

She spent every day caring for her daughter.

She learned every medication.

Every warning sign.

Every sound Emily made when she was struggling to breathe.

And she loved that little girl with a desperation that frightened even her.

Then, one winter evening, everything went wrong.

Emily collapsed in the kitchen.

Beatrice screamed for Robert.

They rushed the little girl to the hospital.

Doctors discovered that Emily needed an emergency procedure.

But there was a problem.

The family’s insurance had been canceled months earlier.

Robert had lost his job and had hidden it from Beatrice.

They had almost no money.

The hospital demanded payment before scheduling the procedure.

Beatrice begged.

She cried.

She called relatives.

She borrowed everything she could.

But it wasn’t enough.

Then a doctor quietly told her that there was another possibility.

A charity program could cover Emily’s surgery, but the paperwork would take time.

Time Emily didn’t have.

Beatrice spent that entire night sitting beside her daughter’s hospital bed.

Emily opened her eyes sometime after midnight.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby.”

“Am I going to die?”

Beatrice felt something inside her break.

“No.”

Emily smiled weakly.

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

But Beatrice didn’t know how she could keep that promise.

The next morning, Robert arrived.

He had been drinking.

He stood beside Beatrice and whispered something she would never forget.

“Take her home.”

“What?”

“We can’t afford this.”

“She needs surgery.”

“I know.”

“Then find the money.”

“I can’t.”

Beatrice stared at him.

“You’re her father.”

Robert looked away.

That was the moment Beatrice understood.

She was alone.

That afternoon, she made a decision.

A terrible one.

A desperate one.

She took Emily out of the hospital.

But she didn’t take her home.

Instead, she drove to an old farmhouse owned by a woman named Margaret Hale.

Margaret ran a small private foundation for children with serious illnesses.

Beatrice had heard about her through a nurse.

Margaret listened to the entire story.

Then she offered Beatrice a choice.

She could admit Emily into a private program that would pay for the treatment.

But there was a catch.

The foundation’s funding was limited, and the child had to remain under their care for several months.

Beatrice agreed.

Emily was taken away that night.

And Beatrice went home alone.

She told Brandon that his sister had been sent to stay with relatives.

She told Robert the truth.

He became furious.

“You gave our daughter away!”

“I saved her life!”

“You had no right!”

“She was dying!”

Robert struck Beatrice across the face.

It wasn’t the first time.

But it was the first time Beatrice understood that she had to get away from him.

She packed a bag.

She took Brandon.

And she left.

She never went back.
