I almost declined the invitation, but my mother called three separate times.

“Just one peaceful family celebration.”
I wanted to believe her.
That was my mistake.
At first, my daughter Ava tried playing with her cousins. They snatched her toys, laughed when she became upset, and excluded her from every game. Eventually, she climbed into my lap, wrapped her tiny arms around my neck, and whispered, “Mommy… I want to go home.”
I kissed her forehead.
“Right after Grandpa blows out his candles.”
If I could relive one moment in my life…
That would be the one.
A few minutes later, Ava quietly wandered into the kitchen for a drink of water. I could see the doorway from across the room and thought she was perfectly safe.
