The video my mom didn’t know about

  • by

Caleb turned pale.

Not the way people turn pale from surprise. But the way people turn pale when they realize a closed door has suddenly opened, and behind it lies the truth.

« Harper, » he repeated, more quietly, but his voice was sharp. « Sit down. Now. »

The judge looked at him over his glasses.

– Mr. Dawson, don’t interfere.

My lawyer, Daniel, lightly touched my arm under the table, as if warning me not to speak, not to move, not to frighten the child.

And I couldn’t.

I looked at my daughter and couldn’t understand how she could fit so much courage into her small, thin body.

Harper pulled her tablet out of her backpack. Her fingers trembled as she entered the password. The unicorn wallpaper we’d chosen together last summer flashed on the screen.

“I didn’t take it off on purpose,” she said. “At first. Then I left it.”

The judge stood up.

« We’ll take a short break. The child, the lawyers, and the parties will proceed to my office. »

Caleb stood up abruptly.

The chair creaked across the floor.

And for the first time in many months, I saw uncertainty on his face.

Fear.

Stage 2. Judge’s office

The judge’s office was smaller than I imagined. There was no formality. A desk, cabinets, a flag, a few chairs, and the heavy smell of paper.

Harper sat down next to me, but she held the tablet tightly, as if she was afraid that someone would snatch it from her hands.

« Harper, » the judge said softly, « do you understand how serious this is? »

She nodded.

– Yes.

– You can stop at any time.

– I don’t want to stop.

Caleb tried to smile.

– Baby, you just misunderstood the adult conversation.

Harper didn’t even look at him.

– No, Dad. I understand.

These three words hit harder than any scream.

She clicked on the video.

At first, the screen was black. Then our kitchen appeared. The camera was positioned somewhere low—apparently the tablet was lying on a stool or a shelf.

I recognized that evening.

I thought Harper was sleeping then.

In the video, Caleb stood at the table and I was at the sink. I was tired, wearing an old gray sweater, with wet hands. He spoke quietly but clearly:

« You won’t prove it to anyone. Everyone knows you’re hysterical. »

My heart sank.

Stage 3: What’s Left Behind the Door

In the video I said:

– Caleb, please, not in front of Harper.

He chuckled.

— And with whom? Let him see what kind of mother she has.

Then he came closer. He didn’t hit me. He never hit me hard enough to leave bruises. Caleb was smarter. He knew how to destroy with words, intonation, pauses.

« You’re nothing without me, » he said on the recording. « I’ll take her. And you’ll see your daughter on weekends if you behave yourself. »

I was silent in the video.

The judge’s expression did not change, but his fingers tightened on the pen.

Then Caleb turned to the door.

– Harper! Come here.

My daughter appeared in the video. In pajamas, barefoot, with a sleepy face.

I gasped.

I didn’t know she was coming out then.

Caleb crouched in front of her.

« Remember, Mom made a scene again. If anyone asks, say she screamed. »

Harper said quietly in the video:

– But she didn’t scream.

Caleb smiled.

— Do you want to live with me in a nice house or with a mother who ruins everything?

Harper lowered her head.

And the judge’s office became so quiet that I could hear my own breathing.

Stage 4. Second video

“There’s more,” Harper whispered.

Caleb took a sharp step forward.

– Enough!

My lawyer immediately stood between him and the child.

– Back, Mr. Dawson.

The judge said coldly:

– Sit down.

Caleb sat up.

Harper opened the second entry.

This time the camera was filming the living room. All that was visible was the edge of the sofa and Caleb’s feet. His voice sounded irritated:

– Mom doesn’t need to know about this account.

A woman’s voice answered from the phone:

– What if she finds it?

I recognized the voice.

Melissa. His « colleague » who wrote too often in the evenings.

Caleb said:

« She won’t find it. She’s too busy playing the victim. After the divorce, I’ll arrange custody, sell the house, and everything will be fine. »

I looked sharply at the lawyer.

House.

He wanted to sell our house.

That same house that we bought partly with money from my mother’s inheritance, but which we registered jointly because I believed the words “we are one family” back then.

In the video, Caleb continued:

« The main thing is that Harper tells the judge she’s scared with her mother. I’ve already explained to her that it’s best that way. »

Harper turned off the recording.

Tears flowed silently down her cheeks.

« I didn’t want to lie, » she said. « But Dad said that if I didn’t help, Mom would ruin everything. »

I wanted to hug her, but I was afraid to scare her away.

– Darling…

She turned to me.

– I’m sorry, Mom.

And that’s when I started crying.
