A glass stovetop can make a kitchen look sleek and modern, but keeping that shiny surface clean can be surprisingly frustrating. Grease, food splatters, boiled-over sauces, and burned-on residue can quickly turn a beautiful cooktop into a cloudy, streaky mess.
The good news is that you don’t need expensive cleaning products or hours of scrubbing. The key is using the right method and, just as importantly, avoiding techniques that can scratch or damage the glass.
Before you start, make sure the cooktop is switched off and completely cool. Never pour cold water or cleaning products onto a hot glass surface.
Start by removing loose crumbs and food particles with a soft, dry cloth. This simple step matters because rubbing crumbs across the surface can potentially cause fine scratches.
Next, dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and wipe the entire surface. This helps loosen fresh grease and soft food residue before you tackle anything more stubborn.
For everyday grease and grime, add a small amount of mild dish soap to a damp microfiber cloth. Gently wipe the surface using circular motions, paying extra attention to areas around the burners where cooking splashes tend to collect.
If you have dried or burned-on food, don’t immediately reach for a rough sponge or abrasive cleaner. Instead, place a warm, damp cloth over the residue for several minutes. The moisture and warmth can help soften the buildup, making it easier to remove without aggressive scrubbing.
For stubborn deposits that remain, use a cooktop scraper specifically designed for glass or ceramic cooktops, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the scraper at the recommended angle and work gently. Never use a knife, razor blade held improperly, steel wool, or another sharp household object that could scratch the surface.
Once the residue has been removed, wipe the cooktop again with a clean damp microfiber cloth to remove soap and loosened debris.
