Alzheimer’s disease usually does not begin with one dramatic symptom. In many cases, the earliest changes are subtle and may initially look like ordinary forgetfulness, confusion, or difficulty with familiar tasks.
One claim that has attracted attention is that changes in the way a person manages showering or bathing could sometimes be noticeable during the early stages of cognitive decline. However, it is important to understand that there is no single shower-related symptom that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.
Instead, changes in bathing habits may be part of a broader pattern of difficulty with everyday activities.
Difficulty Knowing What to Do in the Shower
Taking a shower seems simple because most people perform the same sequence automatically: turn on the water, adjust the temperature, use soap and shampoo, rinse, dry off, and get dressed.
For someone experiencing cognitive impairment, however, familiar sequences can sometimes become confusing.
A person may forget the usual order of steps, have difficulty deciding what to do next, or need reminders for tasks they previously completed without assistance.
This type of difficulty can be related to problems with planning and carrying out familiar activities, sometimes called apraxia when the problem involves performing learned movements despite having the physical ability to perform them.
Forgetting How Familiar Products Are Used
Another possible warning sign is difficulty using everyday bathroom products.
Someone who has used shampoo, soap, toothpaste, or a shower control for decades may suddenly seem unsure about how to use them.
For example, they might repeatedly ask what a familiar product is for, use it incorrectly, or leave products unused because they cannot remember the usual routine.
One isolated incident does not indicate Alzheimer’s disease. Everyone can become distracted or forget what they were doing. What matters is whether the behavior becomes persistent and occurs alongside other changes in memory or thinking.
