My father-in-law burned my six-month pregnant belly with his cigarette while my husband held my wrists

PART 2 — THE DEED

The table runner came loose with one violent pull.

Crystal glasses tipped.

Wine spilled across the white plates.

A serving dish crashed onto the floor.

Everyone froze.

I stood there breathing heavily, one hand protecting my stomach.

Grant stared at the wreckage.

“What the hell did you just do?”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“I took back what belongs to me.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Claire, stop this.”

I raised my phone.

“No.”

For the first time that evening, my husband looked uncertain.

I opened the property records on my phone.

Then I turned the screen toward them.

“Grant, you told me to get out of your house.”

He nodded angrily.

“So?”

I smiled.

“It’s not your house.”

Silence.

Diane slowly put down her wineglass.

“What are you talking about?”

I enlarged the document.

“The penthouse belongs to me.”

Brooke stared at the screen.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I pointed at the ownership record.

“My name is Claire Bennett. Sole owner.”

Grant’s face turned red.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“It proves everything.”

I had purchased the penthouse eighteen months before my wedding.

Ryan knew.

At least, I thought he did.

Then I noticed the expression on his face.

He looked genuinely shocked.

I turned toward him.

“You never told them?”

Ryan swallowed.

“I thought…”

“You thought what?”

“That after we married, it was ours.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“But I’m your husband.”

“And I’m the woman you just watched being burned while you held my wrists.”

He went silent.

I reached for my phone again.

“There are security cameras throughout this penthouse.”

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

Grant’s face changed.

I continued.

“The footage from tonight is automatically backed up.”

Diane stood abruptly.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I already did.”

PART 3 — THE CALL

I walked into the kitchen.

My hands were still shaking.

The pain from my stomach had begun spreading through my body, and my baby was moving strangely.

I called my doctor.

She answered immediately.

“Claire?”

“I’ve been injured.”

Her voice changed.

“What happened?”

I told her.

She didn’t hesitate.

“Go to the hospital immediately.”

Ryan heard her through the phone.

“I’ll drive you.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“Claire—”

“You don’t get to touch me.”

He stopped.

Grant scoffed.

“She doesn’t need an ambulance. She’s being dramatic.”

I turned toward him.

“My doctor disagrees.”

Then I called one more person.

My attorney.

“Evelyn?”

“Yes?”

“I need the emergency ownership documents.”

“Are you sure?”

“Tonight.”

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

Ryan stared at me.

“What are you doing?”

“Ending this.”

PART 4 — THE HOSPITAL

The hospital lights were painfully bright.

Doctors examined the burn.

They monitored the baby.

I lay completely still while the monitor picked up the tiny heartbeat.

Fast.

Steady.

Alive.

I closed my eyes.

Then I cried.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my baby was still there.

My doctor squeezed my hand.

“She’s responding well.”

I opened my eyes.

“She?”

The doctor smiled.

“You’re having a daughter.”

A daughter.

I put my hand over my stomach.

For the first time that night, I smiled.

“My little girl.”

Then the door opened.

Ryan stood there.

I immediately sat up.

“What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to see you.”

“No.”

“Claire, please.”

He stepped closer.

“I made a mistake.”

I stared at him.

“You didn’t make one mistake.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I panicked.”

“You held my wrists.”

“I was trying to stop you from attacking Dad.”

I almost laughed.

“Attacking him?”

“You were yelling.”

“He burned me.”

“I know.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t know.”

“You watched it happen.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I was wrong.”

“You weren’t confused, Ryan.”

“You chose them.”

That sentence destroyed him.

He sat down in the chair.

“I love you.”

I looked away.

“You loved the version of me who paid for everything.”

“That isn’t true.”

“Then why didn’t you ever ask what I wanted?”

He had no answer.
