My 10-year-old daughter suddenly collapsed at school, and I rushed her to the hospital alone. Then a pale nurse ran toward me and said,

The Truth Behind Emma’s Collapse

PART 2 — The First Test

The doctor closed the door behind him.

“Mrs. Johnson, your daughter’s blood work shows traces of a medication that was not prescribed to her.”

My heart stopped.

“What medication?”

He hesitated.

“A powerful sedative.”

I looked at Emma.

She was awake now, but barely.

“Could she have taken something accidentally?”

“We’re checking that.”

Michael stepped closer.

“Could this have been something she ate?”

The doctor shook his head.

“The concentration is too high.”

I stared at my husband.

He looked terrified.

But there was something else in his expression.

Recognition.

It lasted only a second.

Then he looked away.

“Michael?”

He swallowed.

“What?”

“You know something.”

“No.”

His answer came too quickly.

The doctor noticed it too.

“Mr. Johnson, we need to ask both of you some questions.”

Michael nodded.

I moved closer to Emma.

She opened her eyes.

“Mommy?”

“I’m here.”

“Don’t let Daddy be mad at me.”

I looked at Michael.

His face went white.

“Why would I be mad at you?”

Emma began crying.

“Because I didn’t do what you told me.”

The room went silent.

I felt ice spread through my chest.

“What did Daddy tell you to do?”

Emma looked frightened.

Then she whispered:

“He told me not to tell you.”

PART 3 — The Secret

I turned toward Michael.

“What did you tell our daughter?”

“Nothing dangerous.”

“Then why did she think she had to hide it?”

Michael ran a hand through his hair.

“I gave her something to help her sleep.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She wasn’t sleeping.”

“You gave a ten-year-old medication?”

“It was only a small amount.”

The doctor stepped between us.

“Mr. Johnson, what exactly did you give her?”

Michael didn’t answer.

I already knew.

My training as a nurse told me exactly how dangerous this could be.

“Where did you get it?”

He looked at me.

“From work.”

“Whose prescription?”

Silence.

The doctor looked toward the nurse.

“Call security.”

Michael immediately stepped backward.

“No. Wait.”

I felt as though I were watching a stranger.

“You’ve been giving our daughter medication without telling me?”

“I was trying to help her.”

“You could have killed her.”

“I didn’t know!”

“You’re a doctor!”

The words came out as a scream.

Emma began crying.

I immediately turned back toward her.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

She reached for my hand.

“I didn’t want to take it.”

My stomach dropped.

“You didn’t?”

She shook her head.

“Daddy said I had to.”

Michael covered his face.

The police arrived minutes later.

But before they could question him, Emma whispered something that changed everything.

“Mommy…”

“Yes?”

“It wasn’t Daddy who gave me the first one.”
