PART 2 — Daniel’s Decision
The courtroom fell completely silent.
Daniel stood at the witness stand, his hands trembling slightly. He looked first at the judge, then at the woman sitting across the room—the woman who had given birth to him.
Finally, he turned toward me.
“Everyone keeps asking who my real mother is,” he began. “But I think they are asking the wrong question.”
Isabella lowered her eyes.
Daniel continued.
“My biological mother gave birth to me. I will never deny that. But María is the person who raised me. She was there when I had pneumonia at six years old. She stayed awake all night when I had a fever. She worked double shifts so I could go on my school trip. She was there when I scored my first goal, when I failed my math exam, when my heart was broken for the first time…”
His voice cracked.
“She didn’t have millions. She didn’t have a mansion. She didn’t have private schools or expensive cars.”
Daniel looked directly at Isabella.
“But she had time for me.”
Isabella began to cry.
Her lawyer stood and objected, saying the boy was being emotionally influenced.
The judge raised a hand.
“Let him finish.”
Daniel took another breath.
“I don’t hate my biological mother. I actually feel sorry for her. Because she missed seventeen years of my life.”
Then he said the words that nobody expected.
“But I am not a suitcase she can come back and pick up when she finally has room for me.”
A murmur spread through the courtroom.
I covered my mouth, trying desperately not to cry.
Daniel looked at the judge.
“I don’t want her money. I don’t want her hotels. I don’t want her name.”
He paused.
“I want to go home with my mother.”
The judge stared at him for several seconds.
Then he asked quietly, “Which mother?”
Daniel pointed toward me.
“Her.”
