The elevator carried me downstairs while Ryan stayed behind.

Once I reached the lobby, I called 911.

Then I called my attorney.

Before leaving the building, I also instructed security to preserve every second recorded by the cameras upstairs. I wanted the footage from that night saved exactly as it was.

By midnight, I was in the emergency room while doctors monitored my baby. The pain from the burn still pulsed beneath my clothes, but hearing that my baby was being watched carefully gave me one thing to focus on.

A detective sat beside me.

“Did the cameras capture what happened?”

I looked toward the hospital window, where fireworks were exploding over Denver.

“Yes.”

My phone buzzed.

It was my attorney.

The message told me not to contact Ryan—and said she’d found something else involving my money.
