Confronting Mark

When Tessa’s absence from school became impossible to ignore, dread coiled in my stomach. After following her that morning, I felt new panic surging as I faced Mark in the living room, the weight of our secrets heavy in the air.

“Mark, we need to talk about Tessa,” I said, my voice strained. “She’s been missing school, and I need to know why.”

“She’s just going through a phase, Elowen,” he replied dismissively, avoiding my gaze. “Teenagers do this. It’s normal.”

“Normal? She’s missing classes! This isn’t just moodiness!” I snapped, frustration boiling over. My heart raced as I searched his eyes for something—an acknowledgment, an assurance. But all I found were evasive glances.

“I’m sure she’ll be back to her old self soon,” he insisted, shrugging it off like a cold breeze. But I couldn’t shake the growing suspicion gnawing at me. What did he know that he wasn’t saying?

The pit in my stomach deepened as I sensed a wall between us, one that had been built over years of hidden truths. “Mark, please,” I pressed, desperation creeping into my voice. “I need you to be honest with me. Is there something I should know?”

His silence was deafening. I felt the distance endless, the secrets heavier than ever.

Secrets Uncovered

Determined to uncover the truth, I grabbed Tessa’s phone, heart racing as I unlocked it. I rifled through her messages; they were a maze of coded words, snippets of laughter, and something darker lurking beneath.

“Who is Jake?” I whispered to myself, noticing the name pop up repeatedly, always close to the heart emojis.

“What are you up to, Tessa?” I murmured, my fingers trembling as I scrolled.

A sudden sound from the living room jolted me. Mark was pacing, his voice low and urgent. It pierced through my thoughts. I crept closer, pressing my ear against the wall.

“I told you, keep Tessa out of it,” I overheard him say. “She doesn’t need to know.”

My pulse quickened. Who was he talking to? I leaned in closer, heart hammering in my chest as I strained to catch every word.

“Yeah, she’s been communicating with him,” Mark continued, his voice tense. “I’m handling it.”

My stomach dropped. It was clear he knew more than he was letting on about Jake and Tessa, and the realization sent chills down my spine. I needed answers, but how many more secrets lay buried beneath the surface?

Confronting Mark

My heart raced as I confronted Mark, the weight of unspoken truths hanging between us. “Who is Jake?” I demanded, my voice a mix of anger and confusion.

Mark looked startled, his eyes darting away. “He’s just a friend from my past,” he replied hastily, avoiding my gaze. “He’s fallen into some bad company, but Tessa’s not involved in anything dangerous.”

His words only fueled my anxiety. “How can you be so sure? She’s been skipping school!” I pressed, feeling my frustration boil over.

Mark sighed, running a hand through his hair. “She’s a teenager, Elowen. This is probably just a phase. You’re overreacting.”

Every instinct screamed that he was keeping something from me. I needed to know the truth. I couldn’t sit back and let this go. “I’m going to talk to her,” I stated firmly, my resolve hardening. “I want to hear it from Tessa.”

The Call

That night, I waited by the window, scanning the street for Tessa’s familiar figure. The clock ticked loudly, each passing moment deepening my worry. Would she open up to me?

When the door creaked open, Tessa stepped inside, her expression defensive. “What’s going on?” she asked, eyeing me warily.

“We need to talk about Jake,” I said, my voice steady despite my racing heart. “Please, just tell me the truth about where you’ve been.”

She crossed her arms, a stubborn look on her face. “There’s nothing to talk about, Mom. You don’t understand.”

“Help me understand then. I’m your mom, I won’t judge you. Just… tell me.” My desperation was palpable.

Slowly, Tessa began to unravel her secret, her words spilling out hesitantly. “Jake isn’t like what you think…” Just as she started revealing more, my phone rang, startling us both.

“It’s an unknown number,” I said, glancing at Tessa, who looked nervous. “Should I answer it?”

She nodded, her eyes wide. I pressed “accept” and brought the phone to my ear. “Hello?”

The voice on the other end sent chills down my spine. “You need to know about Jake. He’s not who you think he is.”

My heart dropped as I looked at Tessa, her expression turning from confusion to pure panic. What connection did this unknown caller have with Jake?

A Dangerous Connection

The moment I hung up the phone, panic clawed at my chest. Who was Jake, and why was he involved with my daughter? My mind raced back to the messages I had uncovered. Tessa had been talking to him about secrets, hiding from the world. What could be so important that she had to keep it from me?

I grabbed my keys, adrenaline coursing through my veins as I sped toward Briarwick Academy. My heart pounded with every passing moment. Was she in danger? Was she a pawn in something much bigger? It felt impossibly wrong that my daughter could be caught up in a world I didn’t understand.

As I turned the corner, I spotted a group of kids hanging out on the sidewalk. Their laughter echoed, but it only deepened my dread. I parked and dashed through the gate, scanning the crowd. Where was Tessa?

In the distance, I saw her. She stood leaning against the wall, laughing with Jake. My breath hitched. Something in the way she looked at him twisted my stomach. I stepped closer, desperate to overhear their conversation.

“Just meet me tomorrow, okay? It’s important,” Jake said, his tone low and coaxing.

When Tessa nodded, my heart dropped. I couldn’t just stand there. I had to intervene. My feet moved before I could think, propelling me towards them.

“Mom, what are you doing here?” Tessa’s voice wavered. The playful girl I knew was gone, replaced by a guarded stranger.

Confronting the Truth

I ignored Tessa’s question and focused on Jake. “What’s going on here?” My voice trembled with barely contained rage. The air was thick with tension as I stared him down.

“Chill, lady. We were just talking,” he said, raising his hands. “Tessa doesn’t have to be around you all the time.” He had a cocky confidence that set my nerves on edge.

I turned back to Tessa, desperation clawing at my throat. “You need to tell me the truth about Jake.” Her silence screamed volumes. I felt something shatter inside me. How could she keep this from me?

“Mom, I can handle it,” she replied, but the way her eyes darted to Jake betrayed her.

“Don’t listen to her,” Jake interjected. “She doesn’t understand.”

Then it hit me. Was this all part of something more sinister? Just as I opened my mouth to press her, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. I answered it, knowing it was a risk.

The world spun, and I stumbled back. My heart sank as realization washed over me. Mark had been part of this hideous web all along. “What do you mean?” I gasped, each word a heavy weight.

“Mom, don’t listen!” Tessa cried, her eyes going wild with fear.

As the truth struck me, I felt completely unmoored. My husband had betrayed me, using our daughter in his dealings with criminals. Tessa’s absences were not mere teenage rebellion; they were a calculated risk that jeopardized our family’s safety. I stood paralyzed, grappling with the betrayal of the person I had trusted most.
