Papaya seeds are often discarded, but they are edible and contain fiber, healthy fats, and natural plant compounds. Social media posts frequently claim that papaya seeds can relieve knee pain, back pain, arthritis, and inflammation. While they have been studied for their antioxidant properties, there is no strong scientific evidence that papaya seeds can treat joint pain or chronic back pain.
They can, however, be enjoyed in moderation as part of a healthy diet.
Are Papaya Seeds Edible?
Yes. Papaya seeds are edible and have a peppery, slightly bitter flavor similar to mustard or black pepper.
Because of their strong taste, they are usually eaten in small amounts.
Ingredients
- Seeds from 1 ripe papaya
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
- Juice of ½ lemon (optional)
- 1 cup plain yogurt or smoothie (optional)
Equipment
- Fine mesh strainer
- Baking tray or plate
- Blender or spice grinder (optional)
Step 1: Remove the Seeds
Cut the papaya in half.
Scoop the seeds into a bowl.
Step 2: Rinse
Wash the seeds thoroughly under cool running water to remove the gelatinous coating.
Drain well.
Step 3: Dry
Spread the seeds on a clean towel or baking tray.
Allow them to air-dry for 24–48 hours, or dry them in a food dehydrator at a low temperature.
Step 4: Enjoy
You can:
- Eat a small pinch of fresh seeds.
- Grind dried seeds and use them like pepper.
- Blend them into smoothies.
- Sprinkle them over salads or yogurt.
Because of their strong flavor, start with a small amount.
