My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped the phone.
“Mark, slow down,” I said, exhausted from crying all night. “What happened?”
“Just come,” he repeated breathlessly. “Trust me.”
I looked around the kitchen.
Six cereal bowls sat scattered across the table.
One child was crying because another had taken their juice.
My five-year-old was still asking where Daddy went.
And somewhere inside me, heartbreak slowly started turning into something colder.
I grabbed my keys.
When I arrived at Cole’s office building downtown, I immediately noticed the chaos.
People stood outside in small groups whispering.
Several employees were staring at their phones.
Someone was actually filming.
Mark hurried toward me the second he saw my car.
“You’re not going to believe this,” he said.
“What happened?”
He lowered his voice.
“Cole got fired this morning.”
I blinked.
“What?”
Mark looked both stunned and amused.
“They walked him out less than an hour ago.”
None of it made sense.
Cole had worked at that company for nearly twelve years. He was one of the senior operations managers. Stable job. Excellent salary. Good reputation.
“How?”
Mark pulled out his phone.
“There’s more.”
He showed me a screenshot from the company’s internal email system.
My stomach dropped instantly.
It was a chain of messages between Cole and Alyssa.
Explicit messages.
Hotel bookings.
Photos.
Private jokes about coworkers.
And worst of all—
Cole had apparently been using company accounts and expense cards to fund weekends with her for months.
Luxury hotels.
Spa visits.
Flights.
Thousands of dollars.
I covered my mouth in shock.
“He used company money?”
Mark nodded slowly.
“The finance department found everything yesterday during an audit.”
I stared at the screen speechless.
“You know what’s crazy?” Mark added quietly. “He was supposed to become regional director next month.”
Gone.
All of it.
Overnight.
I should’ve felt satisfied.
Maybe even happy.
But honestly?
I mostly felt numb.
After sixteen years together, I couldn’t recognize the man my husband had become.
Or maybe I never truly knew him at all.
Then Mark hesitated.
“There’s one more thing.”
I looked up.
“Alyssa dumped him.”
That finally caught my attention.
“What?”
Mark actually laughed.
“She found out this morning after he got fired.”
Apparently, once the company froze his bonuses and canceled his corporate card, reality hit very quickly.
No more expensive trips.
No luxury apartment plans.
No fancy gym lifestyle.
And suddenly Alyssa wasn’t so interested anymore.
“She left him at the hotel,” Mark said. “Took her bags and disappeared.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
Less than twenty-four hours earlier, Cole had destroyed our family claiming she made him “feel alive.”
Now she was gone.
That evening, after feeding the children dinner and finally getting the younger ones to sleep, I heard a knock at the door.
I already knew who it was.
Cole stood outside looking nothing like the confident man who left the night before.
His clothes were wrinkled.
Eyes red.
Hair messy.
For the first time in years…
He looked scared.
“Please,” he whispered. “Can we talk?”
I crossed my arms.
The audacity almost impressed me.
“You made your choice.”
“I made a mistake.”
I laughed softly.
No anger.
No screaming.
Just disbelief.
“A mistake is forgetting milk at the grocery store, Cole.”
He lowered his head.
“I lost everything.”
I looked past him into the darkness outside.
“No,” I said quietly.
“You threw everything away.”
Then came the part I’ll never forget.
From down the hallway, our youngest daughter appeared rubbing her sleepy eyes.
She looked at Cole standing in the doorway.
And innocently asked:
“Mommy… why is Daddy crying?”
Cole completely broke down.
Right there on the porch.
Because in that moment, reality finally hit him.
The woman he abandoned?
Still standing.
The children he walked away from?
Still loved him.
But the fantasy life he traded us for?
Gone in less than one day.
And that was the moment I realized something important:
I didn’t need revenge.
Life had already handled it for me.
