Prickly Pear Cactus Juice: A Refreshing Drink with Realistic Health Benefits

  • by

Prickly pear cactus (also called nopal cactus) is a nutritious plant that has been eaten for centuries. It is rich in fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, and minerals. However, there is no scientific evidence that it can cure cancer or replace treatment for diabetes or other serious illnesses.

Here’s a simple recipe you can enjoy as part of a healthy diet.

Ingredients

  • 1 fresh nopal cactus pad (cleaned and de-spined)
  • 1 cup water
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • ½ cucumber (optional)
  • A few mint leaves (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Step 1: Prepare the Cactus

  1. Carefully remove all spines if they haven’t already been removed.
  2. Rinse the cactus pad thoroughly.
  3. Cut it into small cubes.

Step 2: Blend

  1. Add the cactus pieces to a blender.
  2. Pour in the water.
  3. Add the lime juice and cucumber if using.
  4. Blend for 1–2 minutes until smooth.

Step 3: Strain (Optional)

For a smoother drink, strain through a fine-mesh sieve.

If you prefer more fiber, drink it without straining.

Step 4: Serve

Pour into a glass over ice and enjoy immediately.
