How to Clean a Yellow-Stained Pillow

  • by

Step 1: Remove the pillowcase and check the care label to make sure the pillow is machine washable.

Step 2: In a bowl, mix:

1 tbsp Dawn Original Dish Soap

2 tbsp Arm & Hammer Baking Soda

½ cup 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

1 tbsp OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover

Step 3: Apply the mixture directly to the yellow stains.

Step 4: Gently scrub the stained areas with a soft brush until the mixture covers the stains.

Step 5: Let it sit for 30–60 minutes.

Step 6: Place the pillow in the washing machine.

Step 7: Add Tide Original Laundry Detergent to the detergent drawer. If the pillow is very stained, you can also add a scoop of OxiClean to the wash.

Step 8: Wash on the warmest water temperature recommended on the pillow’s care label. (Avoid hot water unless the label says it’s safe, as some pillows can be damaged by high heat.)

Step 9: Rinse thoroughly. If stains remain, repeat the treatment before drying.

Step 10: Tumble dry on low heat with 2–3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to fluff the pillow, or air dry completely until there’s no moisture left inside.

This method works well for many washable pillows, but always follow the care label first, especially for memory foam pillows, which usually should not be machine washed.
