Foot soaks have been a popular home remedy for generations, and vinegar is often recommended for keeping feet clean and fresh. While soaking your feet in vinegar may help with certain minor foot concerns, claims that it can make nine health problems disappear are not supported by scientific evidence.
A vinegar foot soak can be a relaxing part of your self-care routine, but it is not a cure for fungal infections, diabetes-related foot problems, or other medical conditions.
Why Use Vinegar?
Vinegar contains acetic acid, which creates an acidic environment that may help reduce odor-causing bacteria and soften rough skin. Many people also find that a warm foot soak helps relieve tired feet after a long day.
Ingredients
- 1 cup white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 3–4 cups warm water
- A large basin or foot tub
- Soft towel
- Moisturizer (optional)
Step 1 – Prepare the Foot Soak
Fill a basin with warm (not hot) water.
Add 1 cup of vinegar and stir gently to combine.
Step 2 – Soak Your Feet
Place your feet in the basin.
Relax and soak for 15–20 minutes.
Avoid soaking for longer than 30 minutes, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin.
Step 3 – Gently Dry Your Feet
Remove your feet from the water.
Pat them dry with a clean towel, paying special attention to the areas between your toes.
Keeping feet dry can help reduce the risk of fungal growth.
Step 4 – Moisturize
If your skin feels dry, apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to the tops and bottoms of your feet.
Avoid applying moisturizer between the toes, where excess moisture can encourage fungal growth.
