Bay leaves have been used for centuries as a flavorful culinary herb and in traditional wellness practices. Rich in aromatic compounds and antioxidants, they are sometimes included in homemade facial steams, herbal infusions, or DIY skincare recipes.
However, viral social media posts claiming that “bay leaves are 100,000 times more powerful than Botox” or that they can erase wrinkles, even at age 70, are not supported by scientific evidence.
Botox is a prescription medication that works by temporarily relaxing specific facial muscles to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Bay leaves do not have the same mechanism of action and cannot produce comparable results.
Why Are Bay Leaves Used in Skincare?
Bay leaves contain naturally occurring compounds, including:
- Antioxidants
- Polyphenols
- Vitamin C (in fresh leaves)
- Essential oils such as eucalyptol and linalool
These compounds may help protect the skin from environmental stress, but they have not been proven to eliminate wrinkles.
